    The Arrival
    Shaun Tan
    Hatchett Australia
    English (Belonging)
This is a wordless narrative about a man's journey
from a land of dark and foreboding events to a new
land full of promise and hope. Tan's remarkable images capture vividly the immigration/refugee experience from leaving
loved ones behind, to struggling with an unfamiliar language
and ultimately to finding how he can belong in this new land.
    Kerry Gittins
    The Lost Thing
    Shaun Tan
    Hatchett Australia
    English (Belonging)
A boy finds an unusual looking creature whilst out collecting
bottle tops on the beach. It becomes obvious that the creature
is lost so the boy tries to help the 'thing' discover where it
comes from. The biggest problem they encounter is the
indifference from everyone they meet along the way. But one
small creature eventually directs them to a place where
there are many other odd and lost things and where the boys'
lost thing finally feels he belongs.
    Kerry Gittins
    Vampyre
    Margaret Wild & Andrew Yeo
    Walker Books
    English (Belonging)
A Vampyre boy reflects on his childhood and because of his longing
to live in the light of the day, feels alienated from his family and questions
his identity. This story is a very evocative and thought provoking journey
from darkness to light and explores the themes of choices, identity,
    alientation and belonging.
    Kerry Gittins

    Good Night, Sleep Tight
    Mem Fox/Judy Horacek
    Scholastic
Bonnie and Ben have a favourite babysitter whose much-loved nursery rhymes ensure a wonderful whimsical world before bedtime.
This children's picture book has all the ingredients needed to become a classic. It has a refrain kids will love to repeat: 'We love it, we love it!' said Bonnie and Ben. 'How does it go? Will you say it again?' It has loved rhymes children will delight in recognising and chanting. It has the most delightful illustrations. And it also has a wonderful male role model in Skinny Doug, a babysitter who knows exactly what children need to hear at bed time. Reviewed at The Book
