The Smallest
Nette Hilton/Bruce Whatley
Working Title (Penguin)
It's the night before Easter and for the first time Billy and his band of little bilbies must deliver the eggs.
'This is fun,' they sing as they hide eggs here and there and up and down. But when one of the bilbies gets into trouble, only Billy knows what to do.
Not just fun for Easter, but a great story to start young kids thinking about the bilby and its link with environmental issues. Also a good choice as a resource on Australian Animals. There are excellent Teacher Notes available to download at Working Title. Reviewed at The Book Chook.

This is Not My Hat
Jon Klassen
Walker Books Australia (Candlewick)
When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it's a good thing that enormous fish won't wake up. And even if he does, it's not like he'll ever know what happened. . . .
This is Not My Hat is a great book for librarians to treat with kids. It begs for a discussion about inference, and what we suspect might be true or going to happen because of the pictures, even though they're at odds with the text. Little fish's self-justification that it's wrong to steal, but the hat is a better fit for him than the big fish would make a thought-provoking discussion point too. Reviewed at The Book Chook.
